Intro

  • If you’ve ever wondered how to kickstart your personal growth journey, wonder no more.
  • Setting goals and investing in self-improvement is the key that unlocks this door to transformation.
  • This article is your guide on goal-setting and how to develop a personal growth plan.

The Importance of Goal Setting

You’re probably reading this because you aren’t the person you always have dreamed of … yet.

That’s okay but you want to know why, right? Let me tell you what might be the problem.

Maybe you just don’t know what you want. That’s okay because you’ve still got time and you’re here now.

But try to reflect on your passions, strengths, and areas where you want to grow. Look at who inspires you.

On the other hand, maybe you do have something you dreamed of achieving.

Many young women desire having a fit body or become happier in life, for example.

But the thing is, this is not specific enough and has no deadline, so it remains a dream instead of a goal.

You have only answered the question “what?” partially and not even “why?” or “when?”

Start changing your thoughts into “I want to have a toned physique and strong mindset in 6 months because I want to feel better and work on my wellbeing.”

Now you have a mission and by setting such goals you’re one step closer to your personal growth plan.

Creating a Personal Growth Plan (5-Step Guide)

Think of your self improvement journey as a puzzle, where each piece represents a specific goal.

So, how are we going to finish this puzzle and create that personal growth plan?

Step 1: Write every goal down

Like we said before, it’s important to come up with goals but now we’re going to write them down as well.

This has many benefits:

  1. You remember things better, when you write them down
  2. You have actually made a ‘contract’ with yourself, so now it’s serious and just a fun thought.
  3. You can use this as part of a visualization board or by itself to strengthen your belief and motivation.

The key is to formulate them SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound), like:

“I will have a toned body and strong mindset in 6 months to feel healthier and improve my wellbeing”

Step 2: Break the goals down

To make it manageable you have to take it one step at a time.

Try not to rush into changing everything at once but make it as easy as possible.

If your goals is to have a healthy body, ask: “What daily actions must I take? What would future me do?”

You already now it’s eating healthy, getting enough rest and being active but be specific!

Write down which foods, how much sleep, what exercises etc. until you have everything planned out.

Do your research or ask someone that could help you for advice on these questions.

This way you know what you want to achieve but also exactly how!

Step 3: Track your goals

Now it’s just the matter of being disciplined but for the most of us not everything always goes to plan.

Sometimes unexpected things pop-up that made you put off a task but here it gets difficult.

When you’re forming new habits, consistency is key. Remember slow and steady wins the race!

That’s where tracking your progress comes in. It keeps you accountable and motivated for that streak.

I use an app to track all my habits and my journal also has a weekly habit tracker that I fill in faithfully.

Step 4: Review your goals

Now you track your new habits, the personal growth plan also needs to contain review moments.

Schedule this weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly depending on your specific goal.

During this time, ask yourself the questions below to see whether you need to optimize your plan further.

  1. How is [habit] going? What did I learn?
  2. How often did I accomplish [habit]?
  3. Because of which challenges or obstacles didn’t I succeed in [habit]?
  4. Do I still want [habit] or should I change it?
  5. How can I make [habit] easier for me?

But also, don’t forget to use this time for celebration and appreciation. You can be proud of every win!

When you see results, no matter how small, you will be glad that you started and motivated to continue.

Step 5: Support for your goals

If you’re working on personal growth, it doesn’t mean you should be alone all the time.

It’s good to prioritize yourself and make changes in your life but don’t forget that others can help you.

That’s why, you should include having a support system as part of creating the personal growth plan.

How wonderful it is when you are surrounded with people who inspire, uplift and drive you to your goals.

When you don’t feel like sticking to the plan, they will be there to help you!

So, please seek knowledge through books, podcasts and articles but also family, friends and coaches!
